Buxton is a small, progressive and diverse boarding and day college preparatory school nestled in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. Buxton participates in the 'Urban Intensive' which is a unique, student-driven journey to a city of specific interest to the school. All responsibility is given to students to complete all managerial and administrative tasks to travel and immerse themselves in a new community. Past trips have involved students breaking into groups that focus on a specific topic, such as documentary film of post-Hurricane Katrina housing in New Orleans or studying inner city murals in Philadelphia. In the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in conversation, dialogue, and heated debates to challenge themselves and peers to learn more deeply. Buxton students are require to participate in a Work program, where twice a week students break into groups to perform maintenance work such as cleaning, painting, office work, gardening, crew or costume work in the theater, or picking apples among other tasks.
